Overview
During the opening years of the 20th century, the physical planning of new settlements emerged as one of the key British contributions to the international development of urban planning. Following the limited success of Letchworth, Ebenezer Howard resolved to create the second of only two garden cities in the UK incorporating lessons learned. Thus Welwyn Garden City (WGC) was at the forefront of this revolution in the development of sustainable communities. As a visionary alternative to the perceived social and environmental problems of contemporary towns, it represented a desire to create a new civilisation in a better environment. In combining the vision of Ebenezer Howard and the brilliance of Louis de Soissons’s planning it set a benchmark for 20th-century urban design and environmental standards that has been imitated throughout the world.
In a day of talks and a tour by leading professionals in the field of new planned communities, the Welwyn Garden City Heritage Trust examines the current context of designing and delivering new settlements in the UK and the continuing relevance of Welwyn Garden City within this field. Responding to the endorsement of garden city principles in the 2012 National Planning Policy Framework that resulted from the work of the Town & Country Planning Association, the conference will provide an understanding of the benefits, challenges, and processes of creating large-scale planned communities and the applicability of garden city principles to the process. Learning from our past experience of developing and managing new settlements has never been more important.
