Where Do You Think We Played?

Just what did Welwyn Garden City residents get up to in their spare time during 1920-1970? Did you join or set up a local club or society? Were you into sports, arts, music, languages, debating, socialising? What did you collect, get active with or play at?
These are some of the questions about life in Welwyn Garden City over the years that the Heritage Trust is asking members of the public to help them answer.
Welwyn Garden City Heritage Trust is now on its third and final project to bring together a detailed history of how the town lived, worked and played since it began life in 1920. The Trust now has a project office at the Weltech Business Centre and recently appointed Virginia Simpson and Vanessa Godfrey as project co-ordinators. To be a success the Trust needs your help with memories and memorabilia of how you relaxed after work or school and at the weekends. “We are particularly interested in hearing from officers of the clubs and societies in the town as many will have records and items connected with the activities they were involved with.” said project manager Tony Skottowe.
So if you are a WGC club or society officer and would like to ensure your organisation’s activities in Welwyn Garden City are properly recorded make a note of Saturday 23rd January 2015. Equally welcome are those who would like to volunteer to help investigate those now defunct organisations. Members of the project team will be manning a display stand in the Howard Centre from 10 am to 4 pm between the entrance to M&S and the escalators. The team will be able to explain more about the project and how it will gather audio memories from club members, track down society documents and collect memorabilia. “Please come and chat to us about your organisation - what it did or still does, and how you and your members might be able to contribute to the success of this fascinating project” said Tony. “If you can’t get there on the 23rd but would like to know more please email us at:
