The boating lake at King George V playing fields was intended for model boats. Ernie S, who donated this image dated c1951 to the Welwyn Garden City Heritage Trust archive, told us that it quickly became an unofficial paddling pool despite occasional accidents caused by broken glass and by the fact that the water was never treated against bacteria infection! Homestead Lane housing can be seen in the background.

VE Day street party celebration in Salisbury Gardens. These two images were donated to the Welwyn Garden City Heritage Trust archive by Ernie S. He told us that very little motorised traffic was around in those days so dining tables were brought into the centre of the street and everyone donated food and drink. In the afternoon rain dampened the celebrations but Ernie still remembered ôall sorts of silly races - three-legged, wheelbarrow, etc. being run in the rainö!

John F kindly donated this image to the Trust's archive and told us that the party might have been a Murphy Radio "do" or been organised by Avdel Ltd as his Dad worked for both companies. John is pictured in the bottom right, looking at the camera, with Anthony sitting next to him.
