Runners v Cyclists race 1951 - from the old gravel pit (now Gosling Stadium) railway bridge close to the present ski slope. Runners Johnny Jennings, Mott Salmon, Richard (Digger) Hills, Chris Brunning and Graham Lindgren. Cyclists include Karl Gough, Ken Wright, Bill Whitney. Chris, who donated this image to the Trusts archive revealed "Runners won easily - we chose the course!"

At the outbreak of war in 1939 all athletic clubs in Hertfordshire disbanded. WGC athletes signed with St Albans City Athletic Club when it resumed activities in 1946. Although attempts were made to revive Welwyn Harriers, these failed. This 1949 photograph shows WGC members of St Albans City AC who used to beat WGC Hockey Club in an annual match. Arthur Mills, nicknamed Sonny, photographed in action on 14th August 1949 at Stanborough swimming pool, where he was a lifeguard for many years. Our thanks to Linda his granddaughter for donating this image to our Where Do You Think We Played? project.
