Garden Cities Book

Garden Cities - The British Example - book cover

The Garden Cities book published by the Trust is now available to purchase. It retails at £16.99 (+ postage and packing if required). It is also in stock in The Bookshop (in Howard Centre), W.H.Smiths (in Howard Centre) and Huttons newsagents in Marsden Road.

The book starts from Thomas More's Utopia and goes through early developments during the industrial revolution by men with social consciences, like Richard Arkwright, who began to provide decent housing for their workers.

The thread goes through some extraordinarily advanced ideas from the 1800s then to those from more familiar names such as the Cadbury brothers at Bournville, the Lever brothers at Port Sunlight and Joseph Rowntree in York. All these influenced Ebenezer Howard and eventually he expounded his concept of a self-sustaining Garden City.

Examples in the book include Letchworth, Hampstead Garden Suburb, Welwyn Garden City and the Hungarian garden city Wekerle plus mention of other examples in Europe all based on Howard's ideas.
